Discussion about WikiProject banner templates
[edit]For WikiProjects that participate in rating articles, the banners for talk pages usually say something like:
- "This article has been rated as Low-importance on the importance scale."
There is a proposal to change the default wording on the banners to say "priority" instead of "importance". This could affect the template for your group. Please join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council#Proposal to update wording on WikiProject banners. Usage of British English tags on Commonwealth countries that do not have their own ENGVAR tags (on the basis of "Strong national ties to a topic")
[edit]@Pinchme123: Hello! Please see Talk:Kenyan English. I also posted at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style#Usage_of_British_English_tags_on_Commonwealth_countries_that_do_not_have_their_own_ENGVAR_tags_(on_the_basis_of_"Strong_national_ties_to_a_topic").
Here is some information:
- Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#National_varieties_of_English "Strong national ties to a topic" says: "An article on a topic that has strong ties to a particular English-speaking nation should use the standard (formal, not colloquial) English of that nation." and "For topics with strong ties to the Commonwealth of Nations, or multiple Commonwealth countries or other former British territories, use British spelling."
- Template:Use Kenyan English was deleted. There is no template for specifically the formal standardized variety of academic English used in Kenya. See Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2025_November_24#Template:Use_Kenyan_English
- English is an official language of Kenya, so it is under "Strong national ties to a topic".
WhisperToMe (talk) 17:06, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @WhisperToMe: what point are you making here? Is there a conclusion or recommendation in your comment? It doesn't seem clear to me. Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 17:47, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: A user objects to the addition of Template:Use British English in Talk:Kenyan English because the user believes that the deletion of Template:Use Kenyan English was unfair. The user stated: "The decision was local not global as it was not announced to all of Wikipedia (and certainly no one thought to alert the actual page for the dialect itself to even attempt to find those with knowledge of the subject) and was only carried out as a TfD on an obscure technical page." I asked the user to explore Wikipedia:Deletion review if the user believes the deletion was unfair. Also, the user can gather evidence that formal, standardized, academic written English for Kenya is sufficiently different from that of the UK to warrant a separate template. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:50, 14 December 2025 (UTC) Ah, I see. Well clearly the user you mention is correct that we can't add "Use British English" to an article about a Kenyan topic. That is a direct violation of the MOS:TIES guideline, which says the article must be written in the flavour appropriate to the locale the article pertains to. Since the Use Kenyan English template is no more, we're left with having to use no template at all. It might be better if you flagged it as using British English spelling specifically, since as you correctly mention above, Kenyan English is an acknowledged official language of that country. — Amakuru (talk) 18:24, 14 December 2025 (UTC) When I stated that I planned to replace instances of "Use Singapore English" with "Use British English" at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Singapore#Discussion_about_the_Tempate:Use_Singapore_English (after the Singapore template was deleted), a user replied that there will be a bot replace all instances of Singapore with UK. Also, I read Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2025_November_24#Template:Use_Kenyan_English and the general thrust of that discussion was that the formal standardized, written academic English of Kenya was not sufficiently different from that of the UK to warrant a separate template, and that UK should be used in place of Kenya. I agree with you that "Use British spelling" (+vocabulary? if no international equivalents exist) would be better (to reduce nationalism issues with these templates). The issue with having no template is that then users have no guidance on what spelling+vocabulary to use (as they are not familiar with geopolitics). I found that there is a move to add "Use American spelling" on US articles, and I'm trying to find a way on how to manage this with other English-speaking countries. Before the deletions I used "Use Kenyan English", "Use Singapore English", etc. See Talk:Singapore_Airlines_Flight_321#Variety of English. In 2019 I added Kenyan English to articles like this. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:34, 14 December 2025 (UTC) There is now a broader discussion at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(idea_lab)#Use_British_English_templates WhisperToMe (talk) 21:39, 14 December 2025 (UTC)

Volunteering Request
[edit]I am a Nigerian living in Nigeria, I am interested in helping out wherever I can especially with Nigerian topics (since I live here) and African topics at large. Unfortunately, I'm not fluent in any of the local languages, so I am not yet able to contribute to Wikipedia in any local language, but for the meantime, I would like to contribute wherever I can in English. I am still a greenhorn on Wikipedia, so I would appreciate guidance on how to contribute to WikiProject:Africa. Thank you NetReader75 (talk) 05:18, 8 January 2026 (UTC)

FYI if you, like me, checked this RM to find it already closed, the closer has reverted for a few days to allow more participation, as they hadn't realized this and other WikiProjects had been alerted so recently prior to their close. --Pinchme123 (talk) 05:32, 11 January 2026 (UTC)Requested move at Talk:Muslim conquest of the Maghreb#Requested move 8 January 2026

Requesting look-over on Politics of Mozambique
[edit]Hi. I've been making some major expanisions to the Politics of Mozambique page and I noticed the section on elections and transition to democracy had been copypasted from U.S State Department website with no citation. I removed the offending section in elections but tried to reword and add sources to the transition to democracy section.
Anyways, could someone check the section "Civil war and transition to democracy" to make sure it's changed enough and not too closely paraphrased to the State Department? (Source 5)
I'd also appreciate if someone could review the page since I don't think it's start class anymore, but I'm awful at judging my own work. Thanks! Urchincrawler (talk) 03:07, 23 January 2026 (UTC)

Added a couple news sources. Might add more later. Urchincrawler (talk) 18:34, 26 January 2026 (UTC)This is labelled as a high-importance article on the WikiProject. This used to be a featured list, but it got delisted because it had become outdated. I was wondering if anyone could take a look at its featured list candidacy, as it was nominated almost 2 months ago but has only gotten 2 reviews. Thanks! Hausa translation help needed for bilingual welcome template
[edit]
Courtesy link: Template:Welcome-foreign/Hausa
Hello. Can you help verify a brief, English-to-Hausa translation in a welcome template?
Template:Welcome-foreign is a bilingual welcome template used to welcome new users who have written content in some other language besides English. The template welcomes them first in English, then in their own language, as long as it is one of the three dozen languages it can handle. New languages are easily added. I have added support for Hausa, but I don't know Hausa so I used automatic translation to create Template:Welcome-foreign/Hausa from the original at Template:Welcome-foreign/English. I'd appreciate it if a native Hausa speaker could verify or improve the translation. Feel free to edit it directly, or paste a better translation below, if you prefer not to edit a template. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 04:07, 9 February 2026 (UTC)
Also, if you speak Kinyarwanda, could you check out Template:Welcome-foreign/Kinyarwanda and fix that one up, or suggest improvements below? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 06:38, 9 February 2026 (UTC) Mathglot, it might be worth asking active editors in Category:User ha-N and Category:User rw-N as I don’t think most people watch this page Kowal2701 (talk) 12:37, 9 February 2026 (UTC) Kowal2701, thanks. I tried using the lang categories once before on an unrelated translation issue and found I had to check contributions of ten to twenty editors before finding one still active. Iirc, I finally solved it with a Petscan that could filter on last edit; I'll have to see if I can find that, or reinvent it again. In the meantime, checking the long way I found four at ha-N with an edit this Feb, one at rw-N in Jan, so thanks for the tip! @Em-mustapha, Sudanian, Ibrahim Sani Mustapha, and Mamman Ali: – can you help with this translation to Hausa? And Irifasum, can you check the Kinyarwanda translation? Mathglot (talk) 19:56, 9 February 2026 (UTC) Also pinging Salihu Aliyu and Ndahiro derrick, please see above, thank you Kowal2701 (talk) 20:11, 9 February 2026 (UTC) Hello @Mathglot, thank you for reaching out i'm happy to help with the translation into Hausa. I will review the text and do my best to ensure that the translation is accurate and easy to understand. Ibrahim Sani Mustapha (talk) 20:15, 9 February 2026 (UTC) Thank you so much!
