Question from Breagui (21:21, 9 January 2026)

[edit]

Hello, I'm trying to translate some pages to gain experience and get some work done so I can work as a freelance translator. Could you give me some advice? --Breagui (talk) 21:21, 9 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think Wikipedia, with no editorial oversight of articles translated between different language Wikipedias, would support your work as a translator. Kingsif (talk) 13:36, 10 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Extra space in archives

[edit]

Hello, Kingsif. I stumbled upon User talk:Kingsif/Archives/ 1 by accident.

Is the extra space in |format= %%i in the Clue Bot archiving config at the top of your talk page intentional? Usually, when archive subpages with slashes is used, this value doesn't have the extra slash: |format=%%i, so that archive pages become "Talk:Example/Archive/1", "Talk:Example/Archive/2", etc. The extra space in |format= %%i is needed for slash-less subpages: "Talk:Example/Archive 1", "Talk:Example/Archive 2", etc, because the Bot is sensitive to whitespace (it's a side effect of the configuration being split between |archiveprefix= and |format=). —andrybak (talk) 00:52, 21 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Fantastic Phantom (talk) 21:20, 24 January 2026 (UTC)

[edit]

Hello! Is this the correct format for asking questions on talkpages? In an article I was reading, there's a defunct link in the references. It appears to be viewable through the Wayback Machine, however. So, I was wondering if it's alright to simply replace the link with one for the article in the Wayback Machine. Thanks!

@Fantastic Phantom: - If you sent it through the mentor page, I imagine so, though you didn't seem to sign your comment. As for the link, there's parameters to include in cite templates like "archive-url" and "archive-date" as well as "url-status", to indicate all of the above. Using the visual editor may make this easier, I'm not sure, but you should be able to see examples on many articles which have "archived from" in references. Women in Green reviewing drive

[edit]

Hello Kingsif:

This month, February 2026, WikiProject Women in Green is participating in the February 2026 GAN Backlog Drive, in which we're aiming to review as many outstanding Good Article (GA) nominations about women and women's works as possible. If you want to help out, you can check out the project talk page for a list of nominations in need of review (including some WiG originals). If you haven't reviewed a GA nomination before, be sure to check out the reviewing instructions and guidelines and feel free to ask for a mentor to check your work.

We are also working together with a wikithon hosted on 5 February by Wikimedia UK, which will focus on writing and improving articles about women involved in sustainable development. If you want to join the event, feel free to sign up at the eventbrite page; or if you would be interested in providing a 20-minute assessment and/or a full GA review of the submitted articles in the weeks following, put your name down on the project talk page for updates as the event progresses.

We hope to see you there!

Question from Skyscraper Aficionado (17:23, 10 February 2026)

[edit]
Note: Skyscraper Aficionado's mentor CFA is away.

Hello, I want to be able to use images of a historical event in a Wikipedia article (Wisconsin Walleye War). However, there are no photos I can find that are in the public domain. Would a potential reasonable non-free use rationale be for images that are on a museum website be that historical events are unrepeatable so another photo cannot be replicated? --Skyscraper Aficionado (talk) 17:23, 10 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use rationale would need more than that there are no other photos - especially if known photos will lapse into public domain. Being able to explain why the article needs the illustration would be required. Kingsif (talk) 06:16, 12 February 2026 (UTC)[reply] Sounds good thank you!
