Takato Ishida (Japanese: 石田嵩人; born February 5, 1990) is a Japanese politician who has been the governor of Fukui Prefecture since 2026. He is the youngest governor in Japan.
Early life
[edit]Ishida was born in Fukui City in 1990. Due to his father's work as a surgeon, he spent part of his early life in London, England. After high school, he studied international languages at Kansai Gaidai University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in English. He also received a bachelor's degree from the Pacific University in international relations as part of a dual degree program.
Election
[edit]Ishida, who previously was an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, defeated independent candidate Kenichi Yamada and Japanese Communist Yukie Kanemoto during the 2026 Japanese local elections for the governorship of Fukui Prefecture. Ishida gained a majority of 134,620 votes over Yamada's 130,290 and Kanemoto's 15,735.[1] He ran as an independent politician supported by Sanseitō.[1]
