Oda Nobumitsu (織田 信光, c. 1516 – 1556) was a Japanese samurai of the Sengoku period and a senior member of the Oda clan of Owari Province. He was the younger brother of Oda Nobuhide and the uncle of Oda Nobunaga. Nobumitsu is best known for his role in assisting Nobunaga during the early consolidation of power within the Oda clan, particularly through his involvement in the assassination of Oda Nobuyuki in 1556.[1][2]

Background

[edit]

Oda Nobumitsu was born into the Oda clan, a powerful samurai family in Owari Province during the early Sengoku period. As a younger brother of Oda Nobuhide, the de facto ruler of Owari, Nobumitsu belonged to the senior generation of the clan and held considerable influence within its internal politics.[3]

During Nobuhide’s lifetime, Nobumitsu served as a trusted retainer and supporter. Following Nobuhide’s death in 1551, the Oda clan entered a period of internal instability marked by disputes over succession and loyalty.[4]

Service to Oda Nobunaga

[edit]

After Oda Nobuhide’s death, Oda Nobunaga emerged as his successor but faced opposition from rival relatives and retainers, most notably his younger brother, Oda Nobuyuki (also known as Oda Nobukatsu or Nobuyuki). Nobumitsu supported Nobunaga during these early conflicts and acted as one of his key familial allies.[5]

In 1556, following Nobuyuki’s continued defiance, Nobumitsu acted under Nobunaga’s authority and lured Nobuyuki to Kiyosu Castle under the pretense of reconciliation. Nobuyuki was assassinated at the castle, removing a major internal threat to Nobunaga’s leadership and allowing him to further consolidate control over Owari Province.[6]

Death

[edit]

Oda Nobumitsu died later in 1556, shortly after the assassination of Oda Nobuyuki. Contemporary and later sources do not record his cause of death in detail, though he is generally believed to have died of illness rather than in battle.[7]

Legacy

[edit]

Although he did not live to see Oda Nobunaga’s later campaigns and national prominence, Oda Nobumitsu played a significant role during the formative years of Nobunaga’s rule. His actions helped eliminate internal resistance within the Oda clan and contributed to the stability that enabled Nobunaga’s subsequent military expansion.[8]

In historical accounts, Nobumitsu is often portrayed as a pragmatic and loyal supporter who prioritized clan unity over personal or familial considerations, reflecting the political realities of the Sengoku period.
