Abdulhamid Bagherian Jamnani (Persian: عبدالحمید باقریان جمنانی; born August 16, 1969), also known as Yekita, is an Iranian researcher, author, and martial arts practitioner. He is the founder of Kamando-do (also known as Razmgah Kammando of Iran), a contemporary martial art based on Persian historical traditions and cultural identity.[1]
Early life and military service
[edit]Bagherian was born in Shahi (present-day Qaem Shahr). During the Iran–Iraq War, he joined volunteer forces as a student and later served in the Islamic Republic of Iran Army. His family was directly impacted by the conflict; his brother, a member of an Army Commando unit, was killed in action, and another brother was wounded.
Founding of Kaman-do
[edit]In 1983, Bagherian established Kaman-do, which utilizes Persian etymology to symbolize the physical and spiritual development of the practitioner.[1] On August 16, 1997, the Ministry of Sport and Youth officially recognized the discipline. In 1993, he established the Razmgah Kaman-do campus in Savadkuh County, which served as a training facility for Kaman-do and other athletic disciplines. Despite the expansion, Bagherian noted a lack of institutional support for the cultural aspects of the program.[2]
State conflict and campus raid
[edit]Following the expansion of Kaman-do, Bagherian faced increasing scrutiny from state security apparatuses. On December 25, 2008, he was arrested by the Ministry of Intelligence and held for nine months before being acquitted in September 2009.[3] During this period, state-affiliated media published reports characterizing the organization as a "strange group."[4]
In November 2012, security forces conducted a raid on the Savadkuh campus. Reports from Manoto News documented the shelling and destruction of the "Mahan" training building by law enforcement and military personnel.[5] These events were documented in international human rights reports as violations of civil liberties.[3][6]
Literary and scholarly work
[edit]Bagherian has published books and articles regarding the philosophy and history of Persian martial arts:
- Missing Story of Martial Arts: An Introduction to Iranian Martial Arts Known by Razmgah Kammando of Iran (Nazari Publication, ISBN 978-964-2897-39-1).[7]
- Serenity Within (Aram-e Jan)
- Voice of Passion and Love
- A series of articles titled "The missing story of the martial arts" in Time of Sports magazine (June–November 2008).[8]
He has also been interviewed by various publications regarding his role as the founder of the discipline.[9] Additionally, his ideas have been cited in mathematical research concerning impulsive feedback control.[10]
Humanitarian work
[edit]Bagherian has worked as a volunteer relief worker during natural disasters, including participating in the response to the 1990 Manjil–Rudbar earthquake.
